Sunderman Kicks Off Campaign For SC Legislature’s Third District

Surrounded by dozens of community leaders, business owners, volunteers and elected officials, Rudy Sunderman rudykicked off his campaign to represent them in Suffolk County Legislature’s Third District.

In his announcement, Sunderman pledged to bring fiscal accountability to Suffolk, fight corruption that has plagued county government, and introduce legislation to help in the battle against heroin and opioid addiction.

“I will be a fiscal watchdog for you, ensuring that the Legislature never spends more money than it has,” said Sunderman, who accepted the Republican nomination Monday night at the party’s convention.

“I will fight to ensure that a balanced budget amendment is added to the County Charter and work to find ways to decrease costs in county government while keeping the services our residents.”

Sunderman has had careers in both the public and private sector and understands the balance necessary between business and government. He knows what it takes to balance budgets and make government work. As a fire commissioner, Rudy lowered taxes by 20% and has been recognized by the Comptroller for sound fiscal management.

Sunderman, a longtime volunteer firefighter, also vowed to make the fight against heroin and opioid addiction a priority, having seen too many young lives lost to this epidemic.

“I promise you today that as your county legislator this will not continue. In one of my first acts as your Legislator I promise to work with our officials in other levels of government in furthering our fight against the Heroin & Opioid epidemic and draft legislation that will assist our law enforcement and those struggling with the addiction,” Sunderman said.

With abandoned houses blighting the county’s Third Legislative district, Sunderman said he will work with other levels of government to have these homes removed or renovated, and provide incentives for millennials and seniors to remain on Long Island.

“I will work with our Town officials to address the Zombie home properties that are plaguing our district. I will look for innovative and non-costly ways to ensure that our children and seniors can continue to keep Suffolk County as their home, with the quality of life we deserve,” Sunderman said.

At the event, Sunderman received a number of strong endorsements.

“Rudy is a tireless fighter and a selfless hero who has more than proven his dedication to the people of Long Island. As Fire Chief of the Mastic Fire Department, Rudy has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to public service, and has always been willing to step up whenever duty called,” said Congressman Lee Zeldin.  “The Third District needs strong leadership, and time and time again Rudy has shown that he is the right man for the job. I have absolutely no doubt that Rudy will excel as the Legislator of Suffolk County’s Third District, and I am proud to give him my endorsement.”

“Rudy Sunderman is a dedicated member of the fire service. He is a father and family man who cares deeply about his community and this County. He has stepped up because he sees, as we all see, our county sinking in debt. Rudy is a true leader who will put aside politics and work collaboratively for all of the people of this County. This is why I support him and endorse his candidacy,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.

“Rudy Sunderman possesses the character and commitment necessary to be an effective elected official. His record in the fire service is exemplary and his connection to the local community is strong. Rudy is a person who approaches issues from a pragmatic perspective, not a political perspective. At a time when the County is mired in scandal, debt and oppressive fees, the choice for Legislator is very clear. That choice is Rudy Sunderman,” said Brookhaven Town Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Dan Panico.

“Rudy has always been there for his community, and is always willing to help in any way possible. I’m very excited about the prospect of being able to work in partnership with Rudy on the governmental level because I know that he will give everything he has toward doing what is best for the people of the Third Legislative District,” said NYS Assemblyman, Dean Murray.
