At the April 25, 2017 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Introductory Resolution 1198 was adopted unanimously. The bill, sponsored by Legislator Tom Muratore, “declares April 27, 2017 as “Operation Safe Stop Day,” designed to promote school bus safety.
Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association of Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies. Its purpose is to increase awareness of school bus safety, as well as the dangers associated with passing a school bus illegally.
“An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day,” stated Legislator Muratore. “That statistic is astounding to me—50,000 times each day, we put our most valued resource, our children, in peril. The awareness provided by Operation Safe Stop Day is crucial in preventing school bus accidents that could result in injury or death. Remember, if you approach a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing, you must STOP…it’s the law!”
