3rd Legislative Race Heats Up

Rudy Sunderman Josh SlaughterIn what is expected to be one of the hottest races in town, both major political parties have selected strong candidates for the Suffolk County Legislature’s 3rd Legislative District.
The seat is currently occupied by longtime incumbent Kate Browning who is being forced to retire because of term limits.
The Democratic Party has selected Josh Slaughter, a longtime Legislative Aide to Legislator Browning.
After an extensive screening process that highlighted numerous candidates, the Republican Party has selected Mastic Volunteer firefighter Rudy Sunderman, Sunderman is a longtime volunteer with the Mastic Fire Department where he has served as Chief and Commissioner.
Slaughter is a resident of Shirley for the last ten years and has recently gotten married.
Over 175 supporters attended his kick-off fundraiser which was held at the Bellport Country Club. At that event, Legislator Browning announced her support for Slaughter.
Sunderman, a longtime resident of Mastic with his wife and four children also held a kick off event.
Over 230 supporters attended Sunderman’s event which was held at JC’s Restaurant in Manorville.
Congressman Lee Zeldin, Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Dan Panico were on hand to endorse Sundermann.
“Clearly, because this is one of the open seats in the County Legislature it will be a targeted tace,” said Joan Travan, photo journalist.
Both parties have put up first time candidates, but because of his position as a Legislative Aide to the incumbent, many political operatives say that Josh gets the benefits of being the incumbent. He represents Kate and her office while running. He has a relationship with the unions and many community leaders which some say can be a big help for a first time candidate.
The Suffolk County and Brookhaven Republicans Parties are extremely strong in the Town of Brookhaven but only control one Legislative seat. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore is the sole Republican Legislator from the town.
Sunderman gives the Republicans the best shot to capture a second seat.
“The key will be organization. Your ground game and message must be flawless. There is no time for on the job training or mistakes. Highlighting issues and solutions to problems throughout the district and raising money to get your message is the path to victory,” said one longtime Republican leader.
The operative suggested that it will cost both candidates over $250,000 to properly run the strongest race possible.
Both candidates will now vie for third party endorsements.
It is expected that Josh will receive the support of the Working Families Party and Sundermann the support of the Conservative Party.
The real question which could be the difference between winning and losing if this is a close election will be who receives the support of the Independence Party.
