Father Time marches onward and until we locate the fountain of youth, here’s some of the latest research, with advice on how you can add years to your life.
Sleep - Sleep is when your body repairs itself. Try to get at least 7-8 hours a night. When you don’t get enough, excess cortisol is produced, which breaks down skin cells.
No Smoking - Smoking causes your skin to age prematurely and lose elasticity and moisture. Repetitive actions, such as puckering to inhale, can cause wrinkles to appear over time.
Pour Yourself Some Merlot - You’ve probably heard a lot about resveratrol, a compound in red wine and grape juice that seems to slow aging. The jury is still out on whether resveratrol has the same effect on humans as mice used in the study, but nutritionists say drinking red wine in moderation does have heart-healthy benefits.
Wear Sunscreen - Too much sun can cause damage to your skin by causing wrinkles, sunspots, (causing you to look older) and can also lead to skin cancer.
Healthy Diet - Antioxidants from foods help keep your skin wrinkle-free by increasing your production of elastin and collagen. In Okinawa, Japan, home to some of the world’s oldest people, centenarians stop eating when they’re 80 percent full. In one large study, researchers found that having significant belly fat in midlife can nearly triple your risk of dementia. In the study of centenarians, it was revealed that the longest-living people tend to eat less meat and more beans, soy, and nuts.
Exercise - The more you exercise, the longer you’re likely to live. Every minute of exercise could lengthen your life seven minutes! Moderate exercise can extend your life by as much as five years. And the more strenuous activity has approximately double the effect! So, for example, 75 minutes of jogging has roughly the effect of 150 minutes of brisk walking. So instead of gaining seven times the time spent, you’d be gaining 14 times.
Make Love – Studies show that women who enjoy sex live longer. In fact, doubling your amount of satisfying sex can add up to three years to your life according to the study. It is said “Sex gives you the Zen moment you can’t find throughout the day otherwise.”
