Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco and his staff hosted an open house and family day Saturday showing off the department’s capabilities and special equipment. Visitors were treated to safety demonstrations, rappelling and drills by the K-9 unit, tours of the jail, and maneuvers by the Emergency Response Team.
The first Suffolk Sheriff was appointed in 1683 and the position was made elective in 1821, according to Sheriff DeMarco, who has made a modern emphasis on rehabilitation and educational programs for incarcerated youth and adults to improve outcomes upon release and reduce recidivism. The Sheriff’s Office currently employs 1,270 men and women, including 878 correction officers, 263 deputy sheriffs and 129 civilian personnel.
