Veterans Bill (Finally) Signed Into Law

Dear Editor;
After vetoing it twice, Gov. Cuomo finally did what is right for our veterans and signed the Veterans Pension Buyback into law. This legislation allows all of our veterans who work in the public sector to purchase up to three years of credit in the state pension system.
I’m happy that the governor has come around and done the right thing for our veterans. I cannot express the amount of gratitude I have for our veterans and this bill is the least we can do as a Legislature to help out those who served our country honorably. I’m proud to have co-sponsored this bill and look forward to keeping our veterans a priority.

Is Your Car Ready for Vacation Travel?

Dear Editor:

If you are planning a road trip this summer, it’s important to remember that you shouldn’t just put gas in your car and go. A pre-trip vehicle check is the best way to avoid the inconvenience and potential safety hazards of breaking down miles away from home.
By conducting a thorough vehicle inspection, you can determine how road-ready your vehicle is so you can have any problems fixed before hitting the road.
• Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
• Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, antifreeze/coolant, windshield washer and power steering, brake and transmission fluids. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power.
• Check the hoses and belts and replace if they become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.
• Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
• Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy.
Following a routine maintenance program, like the Car Care Council’s free personalized schedule and e-mail reminder service, can help you drive smart, save money and make informed decisions this summer and throughout the year.

Suffolk Can Help Clean Up Our Environment

Dear Editor;

Suffolk can help clean up our environment and save countless animals by banning single-use plastic grocery bags.
According to Rebecca Hosking, who made the riveting documentary Hawaii: Message in the Waves, plastic bags often end up in our oceans, where they can remain for years. More than 100,000 birds, sea turtles, dolphins, and other marine animals are killed every year after they mistake floating plastic bags for food and eat them.
Paper bags aren’t an animal- or environmentally friendly choice either. The National Co-op Grocers Association estimates that 14 million trees are used annually to make paper bags for Americans. When forests—which absorb greenhouse gases—are cut down, wildlife habitats are destroyed and animals are displaced.
Fortunately, reusable tote bags are a humane, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly option. Check out Ingrid E. Newkirk’s book One Can Make a Difference for more information and tips on how you can help animals and the environment.

Trump to Obama

Dear Editor;

Trump to Obama: “Come, come into my web.” And so far Obama is getting in twined in Trumps web, going deeper and deeper where he will find the bodies of at least 20 dead bodies that have been lured into Trump’s web where there is no way out. To Trump, Sander sand Clinton are minor opponents. His major goal is to lure Obama into the fight, which he is successfully doing. You will remember Trump thinks like General Patton. Patton wanted to go up against Rommel and Patton was upset that Rommel was not his opponent in a battle Patton won.
“Don’t tell me I won a battle against some rookie,” Patton said.
Some of Patton’s quotes: “Americans love a winner and will not TOLERATE a loser.” On Sen. McCain, Patton said “No poor SOB ever won a war by dying (getting captured) for his country; he won the war by letting the other SOB die for his country.” “Rommel you magnificent SOB, I read your book.” After defeating Rommel in battle. So to Trump, Sanders, Clinton and Obama VS Trump is still not a fair fight because Trump has so much over them. President Donald J. Trump. How does that sound? Get used to it.
